Libertarians Pick Fort Worth; State and Local Conventions Explained

AUSTIN - January 31, 2008 - The Libertarian Party of Texas ("LPT") has chosen the Radisson Hotel Fossil Creek in Fort Worth as the site of its 2008 state convention. The state convention will be held June 13-15, 2008.

The LPT's state executive committee has a quarterly meeting this Saturday, February 2, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the same location (Radisson Hotel Fossil Creek in Fort Worth). State executive committee meetings are open to the press and public.

Over 200 candidates are seeking the LPT's nomination. Potential nominees include 10 candidates for statewide offices, 157 candidates for district offices, and 37 candidates for county offices. Nominees will appear on the ballot in the November general election.

Unlike the Republican and Democratic parties, which nominate their candidates with primaries, the LPT will nominate its candidates in conventions. Chapter 181 of the Texas Election Code describes the procedure for parties that nominate with conventions, while Chapters 171-174 govern parties that nominate with primaries -- currently just the Republicans and Democrats.

"State law prohibits people who vote in the Republican or Democratic primaries from participating in the Libertarian Party conventions," said Pat Dixon, chair of the LPT.

Precinct conventions will be held on March 11. They will select delegates to the county conventions. Registered voters may participate in the precinct conventions, as long as they have not voted in primary elections (or in the conventions of other parties).

Candidates whose office territories are contained within a single county will be nominated at county conventions on March 15.

Candidates whose office territories span multiple counties will be nominated at district conventions on March 22.

Candidates for statewide offices will be nominated at the state convention on June 14.

The party's presidential nominee will be chosen at the Libertarian Party national convention in Denver, May 22-26, 2008.

Earlier this month, the LPT announced 210 candidates; however, several have withdrawn since then.
